The CDA is set to release new guidelines for the management of diabetes, sometime between March and May 2008. As the saying goes, they are bigger, better and more powerful than before.

New highlights include a greater focus on achieving optimal control of
glucose, blood pressure and lipids, ensuring timely diagnosis of type 1
in children, and emphasis on early screening of type 2 in children.

A new section focuses on the strong relationship between cardiovascular disease and diabetes while other area include high risk ethnic populations, alternative and complementary therapies and in-hospital care. Overall the final guidelines will contain 209 recommendations (compared with 154) and 38 chapters from 29.

So the only question that remains is whether this new knowledge translates into 'better care'. Are more (rules) really better--or just more confusing?
