Educate yourself

One of the most important things you can do when being diagnosed with type 1 (or any condition) is to educate yourself. There are many ways that this can be done. Some feel comfortable learning from others--friends, family or peers. Others like to learn alone and prefer a more traditional approach using books. Still others prefer the 'new media' and the vast sources of information that the internet provides. Whatever you do, just make sure it is credible information! The last source, the internet, has a lot of good and unfortunately bad information--so beware.

It's always good to start with the basics--just like the ABCs of diabetes [1].

One caution before you start--there is a lot to know so do no get overwhelmed. Take it slowly, there's lots of time. Find out what you need to know to immediately manage your condition and then progress after that to more complicated things--again the ABCs.

Got some pointers that might be valuable for those just diagnosed? Feel free to post them in Diabetes Type 1 GroupTalk [2].
