This is one of the cornerstones of management for those affected by diabetes--both type 1 and type 2.
Although the extent of the diet and effect differ somewhat between the 2 conditions there is significant overlap that some key basics apply to both. In terms of exercise, I have posted some general comments in a previous writing [1].
Diet and type 1 diabetes has similar principles to type 2 but the key difference is the focus on carb counting [2] for type 1. Carb counting can a lot more detailed but this is a good start. Other places to look for this information include online and offline resources (e.g. books).
