Twice as many diabetics as now...how will the world change?

I read this article today:

http://www.kcbs.com/American-Diabetes-Patients-Expected-to-Double/1708451 [1]

"New figures show one in three kids born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime."

This is in the US, but I suspect the trends are similar for Canada, where we're as inactive (or active) and have the same kind of diet.

Governments will spend more on health care...depending on how tight budgets are, we may face some kind of triage. Some physicians are already suggesting that obese men and women should be denied treatment until they lose weight.

There may be a few 'positive' points, though. As more people develop diabetes, it will be better understood and more accepted by the population. Medical companies will invest more money in developing treatments and searching for a cure.

The increase of any disease is a tragedy. The article suggests that the easiest way to combat the incidence of Type II diabetes is to reduce obesity. It's 'easy' in terms of knowing that reducing obesity helps combat diabetes, generally. But widespread failure in the diet industry points to a truth that's not all that 'easy' to digest - it's a lot harder to lose weight and keep it off than we'd like to think.
