Twice as many diabetics as now...how will the world change?

Jonathan Cohen's picture

I read this article today:

http://www.kcbs.com/American-Diabetes-Patients-Expected-to-Double/1708451

"New figures show one in three kids born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime."

This is in the US, but I suspect the trends are similar for Canada, where we're as inactive (or active) and have the same kind of diet.

Governments will spend more on health care...depending on how tight budgets are, we may face some kind of triage. Some physicians are already suggesting that obese men and women should be denied treatment until they lose weight.

There may be a few 'positive' points, though. As more people develop diabetes, it will be better understood and more accepted by the population. Medical companies will invest more money in developing treatments and searching for a cure.

The increase of any disease is a tragedy. The article suggests that the easiest way to combat the incidence of Type II diabetes is to reduce obesity. It's 'easy' in terms of knowing that reducing obesity helps combat diabetes, generally. But widespread failure in the diet industry points to a truth that's not all that 'easy' to digest - it's a lot harder to lose weight and keep it off than we'd like to think.

We all hold a piece of the

We all hold a piece of the key! We as a whole need to educate people on the fact that Type II diabetes can be prevented if not at least delayed. By taking care of ourselves and our children we save the future and ourselves. The U.S.A needs to start paying more attention to the facts as they are the ones to start and spread the 'trends'. We should be eating more eastern style, fresh local veggies, fish, and fruit. There are few obese Chinese although they are starting to appear with the quick and wide spreading popularity of 'Western' food; McDonalds on every other corner. We are so wrapped up in our work and lives that we rely on so many pre-made,packaged foods that we no longer cook and use what is readily available around us. I for one am trying hard to avoid that for my family. Cutting out the preservatives and extras. I want my family to be healty for a long time to come! By cooking and trying to use as much fresh items we get to be more creative in the kitchen as well. Gotta run my dinners ready :)

Yes it is a shame. Part of

Yes it is a shame. Part of the fault lies with corporate greed in my opinion. They'll add almost anything to food to keep you coming back, no matter if there is actual nutritional value or not.
It also causes me some uneasiness to hear that manufacturers pay for the use of the Heart and Stoke logo on food.
